10% of Vehicles Issued E-Notices for Barrier-less Toll Non-Payment
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
Nearly one in 10 vehicles passing through India's new Multi-lane Free Flow toll plazas have been issued e-notices for failing to pay user fees between May and July 2026. Data from five operational plazas, including those in Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan, shows 10.52 lakh notices were issued out of 1.10 crore total crossings. The system uses high-performance RFID readers and cameras to deduct tolls at speeds up to 100 kmph, but faulty or invalid FASTags often prevent successful transactions. The National Highways Authority of India implemented this barrier-less system to reduce congestion at toll gates.
Why it matters
The high rate of non-payment highlights technical and compliance challenges in the transition to automated tolling, which is intended to streamline highway travel across India.
