Students at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara, Punjab, rampaged on Sunday over claims that an outsider raped a female student, vandalising property and blocking NH-44. The violence escalated when students clashed with police, damaged vehicles, and pelted stones, injuring several officers. Over 2,000 police personnel led by ADGP M F Farooqui were deployed to restore order, with the administration imposing a 10-day class suspension and postponing mid-term exams from September 28. The Vice Chancellor assured students that grievances would be addressed as protesters demanded a visit from founder-chancellor Ashok Mittal and an end to blocking access to the university system.
