21 Residents of Tamil Nadu Rescued From Nepal Arrive in Chennai
· India · The Hindu, NDTV, Business Standard
Twenty-one residents of Tamil Nadu, who were among the pilgrims rescued from Nepal, arrived in Chennai late on Friday night. The pilgrims from Chidambaram and Mayiladuthurai were part of a group traveling together in three vans when flash floods struck the region and left several tourists stranded. The group was moved to a rescue camp and later an Army camp before reaching the Indian Embassy, which flew them to New Delhi. Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar and four Tamil Nadu ministers welcomed the pilgrims in New Delhi earlier on Friday. Rural Development Minister N. Anand received the returnees at the Chennai airport and said the State government coordinated their safe return.
Why it matters
The safe return of the stranded pilgrims highlights the swift consular and state-level evacuation efforts undertaken for Indian citizens caught in natural disasters abroad.
