21-Year-Old Woman Jumps Into Chenab After Phone Call With Father in Doda

· India · Times of India, India Today

A 21-year-old woman identified as Payal Devi jumped into the Chenab River in Doda district, Jammu & Kashmir, on Saturday after a phone call with her father, Krishan Lal. The final conversation, captured on video, reportedly included her saying, *'This is my life'* and *'Bye-bye, Papa'* before disappearing into the river. Rescue operations involving police, SDRF personnel, and volunteers were launched immediately, but no trace of Devi was found. According to her father, she had attended a mela earlier in the day, called him claiming she was unwell, and later ran toward the river after a brief interaction with an unknown person. The video, which went viral, shows bystanders attempting to stop her but failing as she leapt into the water. The circumstances leading to her decision remain unclear.

Why it matters

The incident highlights the urgent need for mental health support systems in rural areas, particularly for women, and raises concerns about the lack of immediate intervention in crisis situations. Families and communities in Doda district, as well as mental health advocates, are now focused on understanding the triggers and preventing similar tragedies.
