3 newborns suffer burns after warmer catches fire in Madhya Pradesh hospital

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Times of India

Three newborns sustained burn injuries after a warmer caught fire inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh early Saturday. The incident occurred at around 1.50 am when a spark in the filament of the warmer's heating unit triggered the flames while three infants were inside. Hospital staff quickly removed the babies and extinguished the fire, before senior officials examined the injured infants. All three babies were subsequently transferred in an ambulance to Jabalpur Medical College for specialised treatment as Chhindwara lacked a paediatric surgeon. Civil Surgeon Kanchan Dubey stated that 33 newborns were present in the unit at the time, and the remaining 30 infants were safely evacuated.

Why it matters

The incident exposes critical gaps in regional paediatric infrastructure, forcing families to travel long distances for specialised care when local facilities lack essential medical specialists.
