300 Gather for Anti-reservation Protest at Delhi's Connaught Place; Over 20 Detained
· India · Times of India, NDTV, Hindustan Times
Around 300 people gathered at Delhi’s Connaught Place on Sunday to protest against caste-based reservation and demand reforms in the quota system. Police detained over 20 protesters for demonstrating without permission. The crowd raised slogans and carried placards advocating greater emphasis on economic criteria for reservation eligibility and government support. The protesters called for a review of the reservation framework, including the introduction of a creamy-layer criterion and changes to policies affecting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. Organised by the Instagram page ‘Reservation Hatao Andolan’, the demonstration followed a similar gathering at Jantar Mantar earlier in the week.
Why it matters
The protest highlights growing justifications over caste-based affirmative action policies, which have significant implications for access to education and employment across India.
