43 hours of protest, no FIR: Congress to take police refusal to court in Rajasthan

· India · Indian Express, ANI

Nearly 43 hours after Congress members began protesting at the Jaipur Police Commissionerate, they called off the demonstration on Wednesday afternoon, announcing they would approach the courts instead. On Monday evening, state Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra and Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully led a sit-in demanding a Zero FIR against Delhi Police personnel accused of assaulting NSUI student leader Ritu Barala during a protest in New Delhi on October 13. The delegation, including Jaipur Police Commissioner Sachin Mittal, subsequently provided a written statement saying BNSS 173 is not applicable to the case. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had previously urged Dotasra to secure an FIR in Rajasthan for Barala, who was allegedly attacked while protesting against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Why it matters

The Congress has now committed to filing an FIR for Barala and pursuing legal action against the police, highlighting the party's resolve to challenge the denial of a Zero FIR despite a 43-hour protest.
