A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Japan early Sunday, injuring more than 23 people across four prefectures and causing brief transit delays. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the epicenter was located in the southern Ibaraki prefecture at a depth of 70 kilometres, while the US Geological Survey recorded it at a preliminary magnitude of 5.8. Most of the injuries occurred when residents were caught off guard while sleeping and fell or struck furniture while getting out of bed. The temblor caused minor disruptions, including express train delays serving Tokyo and Narita Airport, power outages affecting roughly 460 homes in Tokyo, and a ruptured underground water pipe in the city's eastern ward of Koto. The Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that approximately a dozen nuclear power plants and related facilities reported no operational anomalies.
