570% hike in entertainment tax: Movie tickets, concerts in Mumbai likely to get costlier – What changes?

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has proposed a significant increase in entertainment tax for cinema halls and performing arts venues in Mumbai. Under the plan, the tax for air-conditioned multiplexes would rise from Rs 60 to Rs 400 per ticket, marking a 570 per cent hike. Non-AC cinema halls would see their per-ticket tax climb from Rs 45 to Rs 200. The proposal, which aims to revise rates that have remained unchanged since 1969, was tabled before the civic body's law committee this week. However, committee chairperson Diksha Karkar has referred the proposal back to the administration, citing concerns over the high cost burden on citizens already facing inflation.
