· Business · India Today, Zee News

The 57th GST Council meeting is underway at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The agenda covers procedural reforms, input tax credit refinement, faster tax refunds, registration norms, return filing, dispute resolution, and GST officers' arrest powers. Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is attending the session to push for exemptions on vehicle input tax credits and to seek release of long-pending drought-relief funds. Additionally, the real estate sector has requested greater clarity on input tax credit provisions, development rights, and Joint Development Agreements. The meeting follows the major tax rate rationalisation exercise conducted at the 56th Council meeting in September 2025.

Why it matters

The decisions made by the GST Council directly impact tax compliance procedures, working capital for MSMEs, and real estate sector taxation across the country.
