59-Year-Old Meghalaya Man Prepares for Class 10 Exams After 37-Year Gap
· India · Indian Express, India Today
Sylvester Shadap, a 59-year-old resident of Thadrang Umngem village in Ri Bhoi district, is preparing to take the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination in Meghalaya. Financial hardship forced him to drop out of school in 1989 and support his family, leaving his education unfinished for 37 years. He is now the oldest among 9,767 former dropouts registered as private candidates under the state's Second Chance Learning Programme. The December examination offers learners an alternative route to complete Class 10 without returning to full-time schooling. The initiative is a joint effort by the Meghalaya government, the Meghalaya Board of School Education, and the Meghalaya Programme for Adolescent Wellbeing, Empowerment and Resilience, featuring 171 learning centres across all 12 districts with no upper age limit.
Why it matters
The initiative provides thousands of school dropouts across Meghalaya an accessible second chance to complete their secondary education regardless of age.
