· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Outlook India

Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar directed electricity officials to ensure swift power restoration in areas likely to be affected by cyclone Arnab. During a video conference with Eastern Power Distribution Company officials on Tuesday, the Minister reviewed preparedness measures and appointed special officers for districts expected to face very severe cyclonic conditions. A total of 6,000 personnel have been deployed for restoration work, including 4,000 from EPDCL and 1,000 each from SPDCL and CPDCL. Machinery has been kept ready to clear trees and vegetation obstructing power lines, and essential materials such as poles, conductors and transformers have been stocked. The 1912 helpline has been equipped to handle more than 30,000 calls simultaneously, and officials have been instructed to coordinate with the Revenue Department and village secretariats to minimise loss of life and property.

Why it matters

Residents in cyclone-affected areas of Andhra Pradesh face extended power outages that could disrupt daily life and livelihoods, while the deployment of 6,000 personnel aims to restore electricity supply rapidly to minimise disruption and ensure public safety.
