AAIB Reports Lapses in Training and Audits Following 2023 Mumbai Learjet Crash
· India · Hindustan Times, News18, India Today
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has attributed the September 2023 Learjet crash at Mumbai airport to the flight crew's decision to continue an unstable approach during poor weather conditions. Investigators found that the crew failed to monitor airspeed and did not execute a timely go-around, leading to an aerodynamic stall at low altitude. The report also identified significant lapses in pilot training, record-keeping, and internal audits at the operator, VSR Ventures. The investigation revealed that required simulator skill checks for critical emergency procedures were not consistently completed. The AAIB has recommended that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation conduct a one-time verification of training records for all fixed-wing pilots in non-scheduled and general aviation organizations.
Why it matters
The findings highlight systemic safety and oversight failures within the non-scheduled aviation sector, prompting a regulatory push for stricter verification of pilot training records across India.
