Activists Challenge India's Proposed Food Warning Label Rules

Non-profit group 3S And Our Health has filed a formal complaint in the Supreme Court against the government's proposed food labelling regulations. The activists argue that the current plan, which requires red warning labels only when two out of three concerning nutrients are high, creates an industry-friendly loophole. The complaint, set for a hearing on September 10, contends that products high in a single dangerous nutrient, such as sugar, should also carry warnings to protect public health. Government sources stated that the labelling system is intended to be implemented in phases and will eventually become stricter. India currently faces a rising health crisis, with the number of overweight or obese adults projected to reach 450 million by 2050.
