· Sports · Times of India, ESPNCricinfo
Afghanistan have reached a historic milestone by breaking into the top six of the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings for the first time. They moved ahead of Sri Lanka to secure sixth place, surpassing former world champions England and the West Indies as well. Since their ODI debut in 2009, they have won 96 of 191 matches with a win-loss ratio of 1.09. Their recent 4-0 series win over Ireland and clean sweep against Zimbabwe have fueled this rise.
Why it matters
Afghanistan's rise signals a shift in global cricket dynamics, challenging traditional power structures and potentially impacting qualification pathways for major tournaments.
