AFP Investigates Australian Links to Flydubai Co-Pilot

· World · ABC News (AU), NDTV, BBC News

The Australian Federal Police are investigating the Australian connections of a flydubai co-pilot who allegedly stabbed his colleague in an attempt to crash their plane on Wednesday. The flight, which was bound for Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, was forced to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, after the jet plunged nearly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds. The investigation is being led by the Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which includes the AFP, Victoria Police, and ASIO. Sources confirmed the co-pilot held an Australian student visa from 2015 to 2017, which was later cancelled in 2019 due to a lack of course enrolment. Investigators are now working to determine if the man was radicalised during his time in Australia.

Why it matters

The investigation into potential radicalisation during the co-pilot's time in Australia raises significant security concerns regarding aviation safety and visa oversight.
