Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is helping finance a new $660m fuel pipeline connecting Djibouti's Damerjog port to Dewele in Ethiopia. The 120km pipeline will feature a storage capacity of about 400 million litres and is expected to begin operations within 18 months. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that the infrastructure will reduce fuel transport time from Djibouti's port to Addis Ababa from five days to one. The project's first phase will transport key petroleum products, including jet fuel, diesel and petrol, to strengthen Ethiopia's energy security. Dangote's broader investments include a 700,000-barrel-a-day crude oil refinery in Nigeria and a proposed refinery in Lamu, Kenya.
Why it matters
The pipeline directly impacts landlocked Ethiopia's energy supply chain by reducing transport times and easing pressure on existing import infrastructure. Djibouti's economy also stands to gain from increased port activity, job creation and higher government revenues.
