Ahmedabad will host the 2029 Weightlifting World Championships, marking India's first time staging the global event in the city. The International Weightlifting Federation Executive Board awarded the bid at its meeting in Ningbo, China on Sunday, after India competed against Venezuela and Russia. India had previously hosted the Commonwealth and Asian Weightlifting Championships earlier this year, and Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghvi called the event a significant addition to the city's growing portfolio of international sports fixtures. The championships will coincide with the city's role as venue for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and will serve as the first qualification tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Why it matters
Ahmedabad gains a landmark international sporting event that showcases the city's growing infrastructure and raises the profile of weightlifting in India, while providing Indian athletes a home-based qualification pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. The event also cements Gujarat's position as a host for major multi-sport competitions.
