Ahmedabad Police Detain 100 Protesters Over Election Commission Agitation
· India · Indian Express, The Hindu
Ahmedabad Police detained at least 100 people, including 86-year-old author-activist Prakash N Shah, during a protest on Ashram Road on Saturday. The demonstrators gathered to oppose Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in solidarity with a separate agitation held by the Cockroach Janta Party in Delhi. Police deployed approximately 250 personnel to clear the area, which had been a site of previous protests regarding exam paper leaks. While authorities cordoned off roads to prevent large gatherings, protesters continued to arrive in small groups until 8 pm. DCP Shivam Varma confirmed the protest did not receive the necessary police permission.
Why it matters
The detention of activists and the heavy police presence in a major city artery reflect growing tensions over election-related protests and the restriction of public assembly in Ahmedabad.
