A surge in global AI investment has triggered a memory chip shortage, causing consumer electronics prices in India to rise by 3-5% between January and July 2026. Data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation shows that price hikes which previously took years to accumulate have occurred within just six months. Products including smartphones, televisions, air conditioners, and washing machines have seen significant cost increases compared to the same period in 2025. Analysts at Morgan Stanley have termed this phenomenon 'chipflation', noting that the high demand for memory chips in data centers is inflating costs across the entire tech supply chain.
