AI-Enabled Tools Spark Debate Over Ownership of India's Textile Traditions
· Technology · Al Jazeera, ABC News (AU)
The rapid rise of AI-enabled design systems in India has reignited concerns over the protection and commercialization of traditional handloom motifs. Assistant professor Bitupan Deka developed an AI tool in Meghalaya to generate modern motifs for traditional fabrics after observing that manufacturers in Assam were cutting costs by repeating limited patterns and underpaying weavers. While technologists argue that such tools assist designers by producing infinite variations, traditional artisans rely on generational inheritance and local techniques rather than automated algorithms. Similar datasets like the Rekh Sanganeri Dataset in Rajasthan aim to digitize hand-block prints while preserving imperfections such as ink bleed and misalignment.
Why it matters
The integration of artificial intelligence into traditional handloom production raises critical questions about copyright, cultural heritage preservation, and the economic livelihoods of rural artisans.
