AI-Generated Political Ads Confuse Voters in US Elections
· World · NBC News, CNBC
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in US political advertisements, leading to voter confusion about the veracity of content. South Carolina Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette featured in an AI-generated ad depicting her in a polygraph test, which some voters believed was real. The Wesleyan Media Project identified at least 220 AI-produced or enhanced ads by candidates and PACs this election cycle. These ads cost nearly $137 million, a significant increase from under $50,000 spent in the 2024 presidential election. Travis Ridout of Washington State University noted a surge in AI ads during closely fought primary races.
Why it matters
