AIADMK Stages Walkout From Tamil Nadu Assembly Over Fisherman's Death
· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Times of India
Opposition members of the AIADMK staged a walkout from the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday after Speaker J C D Prabhakar deferred their request to discuss a specific issue until Thursday. The disruption occurred during a session where Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay had been presenting announcements regarding health, milk procurement prices, and official vehicles for legislators. Outside the Assembly, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami alleged that a fisherman from Mayiladuthurai was killed by Iranian pirates while working in Saudi Arabia. Palaniswami claimed the party had raised the matter for five consecutive days without receiving a concrete response from the government. He demanded that the state administration facilitate the return of the deceased fisherman's body, provide medical care for three injured survivors, and offer financial support to the affected families.
Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between the ruling TVK government and the opposition regarding the state's response to the safety and welfare of Tamil fishermen working abroad. The outcome of these demands will determine the level of financial and diplomatic support the families of the deceased and injured receive from the state government.
