An 18-month-old elephant calf suffering from osteopenia and unable to stand or walk has been flown from Kochi to Jamnagar in Gujarat for specialised medical care at Vantara. Weighing between 125 and 130 kg, the calf was moved from the Kodanad elephant centre using a crane and an animal ambulance with the assistance of 10 to 12 people. Officials from the Kerala Forest Department stated that the animal was taken on a chartered flight from Nedumbassery airport accompanied by veterinary experts. Specialists at Vantara have prepared a treatment plan involving hormonal therapy and hydrotherapy expected to last four to six months. Chief Wildlife Warden P. Pugazhendi confirmed that the calf will be brought back to Keralam once it recovers.
