Air India and Akasa Hike Fuel Surcharges on Rising Costs
· Business · The Hindu, India Today, Hindustan Times
Air India, Air India Express, and Akasa Air have increased domestic and international fuel surcharges following sustained rises in Aviation Turbine Fuel prices. Air India revised its domestic charges to ₹400-₹1,200 and introduced international surcharges of $55 for West Asia, $135 for Europe, $210 for Australia, and $215 for North America for bookings made from October 9, 2026. Akasa Air implemented a domestic surcharge ranging from ₹375 to ₹1,150 based on sector length, alongside a ₹2,500 fee on specified international routes. The carriers attributed the revisions to climbing operational expenses driven by continued geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. These hikes follow a similar 37% to 50% domestic fuel surcharge increase implemented by IndiGo.
Why it matters
Domestic and international air passengers flying out of India will face higher ticket prices as carriers pass on escalating jet fuel costs.
