Airbnb codifies host-request rules banning dish duty for guests

· Technology · Engadget, The Guardian

Airbnb has revised its host rules to ban requests that require significant effort or time, classifying chores like removing bedsheets or doing laundry as unreasonable for guests. Hosts may now ask visitors to gather used towels or remove trash, provided it does not resemble typical cleaner tasks. The updated policy allows hosts to select from seven standard rules, but requests can only be communicated within the dedicated listing section and not via messages, signs, or in-person conversation after booking. The changes take effect on November 20 and were first noticed by Euronews. Exceptions exist for unique situations, such as placing trash in bear-proof containers in areas with known bear populations.

Why it matters

Guests will no longer be expected to perform domestic chores during their stay, reducing friction and passive-aggressive signage commonly reported in Airbnb rentals. The policy clarifies the boundary between reasonable guest tasks and cleaner-level duties, potentially improving the host-guest experience globally.
