AISA's Neha Bora condemns Delhi protest crackdown as 7,000 detained

· India · Times of India, Al Jazeera

AISA National President Neha Bora criticised the police crackdown on protesters in Delhi on October 10, saying 'we cannot let this become normal' after massive demonstrations demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. Bora, among 7,000 protesters detained by Delhi Police preventing access to Jantar Mantar, was held after being taken from a police vehicle. Her detention followed the arrest of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka at Indira Gandhi International Airport upon arrival from Mumbai. The Supreme Court held a special hearing on Sunday on petitions challenging the preventive detention of thousands, including opposition leaders like Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal challenged the detentions and cited concerns over individuals being picked up from trains and suspension of internet services.

Why it matters

The crackdown affects democratic rights of citizens to peaceful assembly and protest, particularly impacting student groups and opposition leaders. It raises concerns over the use of preventive detention under BNSS Section 163 and restrictions on movement and communication during protests.
