AISA's Neha Bora Says Journalists Detained After Groping Charge Against Cops

· India · India Today, Indian Express

AISA president Neha Bora claimed that protesting journalists were detained at Delhi Cantt police station after alleging sexual harassment by police personnel. The claim came as demonstrations continued over allegations by three women journalists who said they were groped during a protest at Jantar Mantar on October 3. One journalist accused Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat of sexually assaulting her after she questioned the absence of women police personnel. Delhi Police said it received complaints from the three women and transferred the matter to the Crime Branch for a fair and impartial enquiry. The Press Club of India expressed shock and dismay over the treatment of journalists and called for immediate action on the complaint. Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticised the delay in registering an FIR, noting Delhi Police comes under the Union Home Ministry.

Why it matters

Women journalists covering protests face risks of harassment and intimidation by police, undermining press freedom and safety. The incident raises concerns about accountability within law enforcement when allegations involve their own personnel.
