Aisha Wahab Wins California Special Election for 14th District Seat
· World · NBC News, New York Times, CBS News
Democratic state Senator Aisha Wahab has won the special election for California’s 14th District, succeeding former Representative Eric Swalwell. Swalwell resigned from his position in April following allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied. Wahab defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez, a member of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board of Directors, in a contest that saw 53% of the vote go to Wahab against 47% for Hernandez. The race saw significant financial involvement from a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which spent approximately $2.5 million against Wahab. Wahab has publicly described Israel’s military actions in Gaza as genocide, while Hernandez was the only candidate in an April forum who did not label the conflict as such.
Why it matters
The election highlights the growing influence of pro-Israel political spending in Democratic primaries and the sharp ideological divisions within the party regarding the conflict in Gaza.
