Ajay Devgn Approaches Bombay HC Over Maharashtra FDA Vimal Ad Notice

· Entertainment · Indian Express, The Hindu

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has closed its proceedings against Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Tiger Shroff over their endorsements of Vimal Elaichi, moving the cases to the adjudication stage. FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe confirmed on Friday that all three actors responded to show-cause notices issued in August regarding alleged surrogate advertising for Vimal Pan Masala, a product prohibited in Maharashtra. Ajay Devgn has independently approached the Bombay High Court to challenge the notice and the constitutional validity of the food safety regulations, contending he is no longer associated with the brand. The Bombay High Court is scheduled to hear Devgn's plea on November 4, 2026, while the remaining adjudication proceedings before the Joint Commissioner are likely to be heard next week. The Delhi High Court previously dismissed a plea by master licensee PB Agro LLP against the Maharashtra FDA notices on September 14, 2026.

Why it matters

The case sets a legal precedent for celebrity liability in surrogate advertising of restricted tobacco and pan masala products in Maharashtra.
