Algerian Parliament Approves First Foreign Troop Deployment Since 1973
· World · Al Jazeera, Bloomberg, Channels Television
The upper house of Algeria's parliament unanimously voted to approve the deployment of military troops to neighbouring Niger during an emergency session on Sunday. The mission, if fully cleared by the lower house, marks Algeria's first military deployment outside its borders since the 1973 October War. The deployed units are expected to secure oil facilities in Niger following a bilateral military cooperation protocol signed after talks between defence officials. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune previously authorised the dispatch of Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niamey in August to support the Nigerien army against a destabilisation attempt. Relations between Algeria and Niger have strengthened significantly in recent months following a prior period of diplomatic tension.
Why it matters
The deployment marks a major shift in Algerian foreign policy and deepens military cooperation between Algiers and Niamey to secure critical energy infrastructure.
