Allahabad HC Judge Critiques Full Court Meetings as Stage-managed

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Allahabad High Court Justice Vinod Diwakar criticised the quality of deliberations in full court meetings, stating the last two appeared stage-managed like a government whipping its members through a confidence vote. He noted that only 16 full court meetings had been convened over the past 10 years, despite rules requiring one every three months excluding summer vacation. The judge observed that no matters of general policy, powers and status of the court, or annual reports on administration of justice were placed before the full court during this period. He questioned whether the full court functioned as a meaningful collegiate forum based on mutual recognition of judges' views. The remarks came in an 80-page judgment dated September 28 in the case of Pappu Met alias Pappu vs State of UP and another.

Why it matters

The critique highlights concerns about judicial administration and accountability in Allahabad High Court, potentially prompting reforms in how full court meetings are conducted and recorded. It affects the functioning of judicial collegiality and transparency in Uttar Pradesh.
