Allahabad High Court Orders Compensation for Illegal NSA Detention

The Allahabad High Court has ordered ₹5 lakh compensation for Akriti Chaudhary, a 25-year-old Delhi University graduate who was held in judicial custody for five months following an April 2026 workers’ protest in Noida. The court quashed her preventive detention under the National Security Act on September 2 and directed that the compensation be recovered from the salary of the Gautam Buddha Nagar district magistrate, Medha Roopam. Justices Atul Sreedharan and Achal Sachdev described the administration's actions as an attempt to deter student activists and ordered that their displeasure be recorded in the service records of the district magistrate and police officials involved. The bench found that evidence relied upon by the administration, including phone data, did not support the prosecution's claims. The court warned that such bureaucratic overreach risks reducing Uttar Pradesh to an Orwellian dystopia.
