Allahabad High Court Orders Uttar Pradesh Government to Pay for Temple Land

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay ₹1.21 crore, plus 8% annual interest, for a 1,512-square-metre plot taken from the Shri. Thakur Ram Janki Sugrivji Virajman Mandir in Ayodhya. The court criticised the authorities for taking possession of the land in December 2023 under the promise of a ₹1.38 crore payment that was never fully settled. While the state government now claims the plot is Nazul or government land, the court noted that the state executed a sale deed before later disputing the temple's title. Justices Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary and Shekhar B. Saraf observed that the authorities should have conducted a proper title search before acquiring the property. The court further stated that if the state disputes the title, it should return the land rather than retaining possession while the matter remains pending in a civil court.
