Allahabad High Court Seeks UP Government Reply On Saharanpur Mosque Demolition

The Allahabad High Court sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on a petition challenging the demolition of a mosque situated on the Collectorate premises in Saharanpur. Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal stayed the recovery of ₹6.41 crore in damages imposed on the mosque management and scheduled the next hearing for October. The order stems from a writ petition filed by advocate Mohammad Tanveer Ahmad against the eviction and demolition ordered by the city magistrate under the Uttar Pradesh Public Premises (Eviction and Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1972. The petitioner argued that the eviction order was issued without properly establishing land ownership, citing revenue records and waqf register entries, while the state counsel opposed the petition due to contradictory ownership claims and lack of documentation. The district court had previously dismissed an appeal against the eviction on September 2, leading to the structure's demolition on September 5.
