· India · The Hindu, Zee News

The Aluva West police have registered an FIR against Coimbatore-based Sree Narayana Guru College and its head of the Department of Social Work over alleged research publication fraud. The case was filed following a private complaint by PhD scholar Sachu Muraleedharan, who alleged he was cheated of ₹26,000. The petitioner was promised publication of his research paper in the UGC-CARE-listed Kanpur Philosophers Journal after presenting at a college conference on March 3, 2023. The petitioner later discovered that his article appeared in an unrecognized clone journal instead of the genuine publication. Authorities have charged the institution and Professor Maria Yesuraja under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal breach of trust, cheating, and forgery.

Why it matters

The case exposes predatory publishing scams targeting academic researchers and PhD scholars seeking mandatory journal publications for their degrees.
