Amazon and Google lead deep-pocketed backers of AI startup Anthropic
· Technology · Reuters, Economic Times
Amazon has committed up to $4 billion and Google up to $2 billion to Anthropic, the AI safety and research company founded by former OpenAI researchers. The investments make the two tech giants minority shareholders while Anthropic retains its independence and public-benefit structure. Amazon Web Services becomes Anthropic's primary cloud provider and Google Cloud supplies additional compute capacity. Anthropic will use Amazon's Trainium and Inferentia chips alongside Google's TPUs to train and deploy its Claude models. The deals give both cloud providers preferential access to Anthropic's models for their enterprise customers. No other investors were named in the Reuters report.
Why it matters
The twin mega-investments cement Anthropic as a credible third pillar in frontier AI alongside OpenAI and Google DeepMind, giving enterprise customers on AWS and Google Cloud direct access to Claude models and intensifying the cloud-AI arms race.
