Amazon Brings Full Google Play Store Access to New Alexa Tablets
· Technology · Engadget, TechCrunch, MacRumors
Amazon's new Alexa Tablets will feature full access to the Google Play Store, marking a major shift from the forked Android version and restricted app store used since the original Kindle Fire in 2011. While the devices come preloaded with Amazon services like Kindle, Prime Video, and Audible, users are no longer limited to the smaller Amazon Appstore catalog. This integration allows owners to download millions of applications and receive app updates alongside other Android users. The new Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11, and Alexa Tablet 8 will launch in the United States, Mexico, and Canada on October 14, followed by the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain on October 19.
Why it matters
Opening up the Google Play Store significantly increases the software utility and app availability on Amazon's tablet hardware.
