Amazon Cuts Small Number of Jobs Primarily in Retail Division
· Technology · Economic Times, Reuters, India Today
Amazon confirmed Wednesday that it cut a small number of jobs, primarily within its Stores unit that oversees the main e-commerce website. The latest workforce reduction affects fewer than 1,000 white-collar workers across regions including the US, India, and the UK. The cuts coincide with Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days shopping promotion and follow a larger round of 30,000 job reductions that began last year. Founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos stated in a recent interview that the reductions were necessary because the company overhired during the pandemic period.
Why it matters
Ongoing corporate layoffs at major technology firms signal continued restructuring in the e-commerce sector following pandemic-era hiring booms.
