Amazon Releases Open-Source Strands Decider 2B Model for AI Agents
· Technology · TechCrunch
Amazon Web Services has released an open-source decision model named Strands Decider 2B, designed to help AI developers sort between pre-decided options with high speed and low cost. Inspired by TypeSafe's Jev model, the system is built on the torso of the Qwen3.5-2B large language model and delivers calibrated choices and confidence scores rather than generating text. Distinguished engineer Marc Brooker developed the project after discussions with AWS customers whose agentic workflows did not require the full capabilities of a frontier large language model. The model is small enough to run locally and emerged from Amazon's Strands Labs, an organization developing new tools and protocols for deploying AI agents. Brooker notes that the primary engineering challenge lies in optimizing speedy decision-making without degrading the model's general-purpose language understanding and knowledge.
Why it matters
This gives developers a lightweight and cost-effective tool to structure reliable automated decision steps without relying on expensive, fully-featured large language models.
