Amazon Removes Alexa Voice Controls for AUX Input on Older Echo Speakers
· Technology · Android Authority, Billboard
Amazon has quietly disabled Alexa voice commands for controlling AUX inputs on several older Echo speaker models. Affected devices include the 2018 Echo Plus 2nd Gen, 2019 Echo 3rd Gen, 2019 Echo Studio 1st Gen, and 2020 Echo 4th Gen. While the physical 3.5mm headphone jack remains functional and the Alexa app can still switch audio modes, users can no longer use voice prompts like play from line in. Amazon stated that very few customers used voice commands for AUX playback but did not explain the decision. The move has drawn criticism from device owners frustrated by the loss of features on hardware they already purchased.
Why it matters
The removal of core voice controls from existing smart home hardware highlights the vulnerability of consumer electronics to remote software feature rollbacks.
