Amazon's Proposed AI Data Centre in Thane Will Make City Unliveable, Says Shiv Sena (UBT)

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray warned that Amazon's proposed AI data centre in the Balkum Pada area will make Thane unliveable due to extreme noise, heat emissions, and massive resource consumption. The ₹7,203.29 crore project spans 53.73 acres and has faced months of protests from local residents and the 'Wake-up Thanekar' citizen group over vague project details, numerical discrepancies, and a lack of public consultation. Mr. Thackeray stated that the facility will require vast amounts of electricity and water while relying on 93 diesel generators and 500,000 tonnes of diesel backup. Residents have appealed to multiple Ministers and bureaucrats to have the site shifted to a designated 'red industry' zone, though they remain without a response. Amazon Data Services India originally acquired the 54-acre land parcel in October 2022 and subsequently applied for environmental clearances in June 2024.
Why it matters
Thane residents face severe environmental and infrastructural strain from high resource consumption, noise, and diesel emissions if the data centre proceeds in a residential area.
