Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated that the State government expects to ease the ongoing power crisis by mid-September through various administrative steps. Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, he noted that instructions will be issued to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to streamline the announcement of power cuts. Mr. Satheesan attributed the crisis to a weak monsoon that lowered water levels in hydel power dams, coal shortages in thermal power plants that limited outside power purchases, and an 800 to 900 MW surge in peak-hour demand compared to last year. He criticized the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for cancelling a long-term power purchase agreement signed during the Oommen Chandy administration, which he said could have secured power at ₹4.29 per unit instead of current rates ranging from ₹8 to ₹14.
