Amit Shah Arrives in Punjab to Meet Families of Anti-Drug Victims

· India · The Hindu, Zee News, Indian Express

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Punjab on Tuesday for a day-long visit to Gurdaspur, Sangrur and Mansa districts. He is scheduled to meet the families of individuals who died in incidents linked to opposition against the state's drug menace. His itinerary includes meeting the family of Bikramjit Singh in Gurdaspur's Batala, the family of Gulzar Singh in Sangrur, and the family of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa. Hours before the visit, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that the Jhota murder case would be handed over to the CBI. Jhota was shot dead inside a medical store in Mansa on October 13 after questioning the store owner about selling addictive substances.

Why it matters

The high-profile visit highlights political pressure over drug-related violence in Punjab and addresses demands from victim families for independent central investigations into activist killings.
