· India · Hindustan Times, Outlook India
The Andaman and Nicobar administration ordered all schools closed for students on October 26 and 27 and urged residents to stay highly vigilant as Cyclone Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. The Directorate of Disaster Management warned of extremely rough seas and advised fisherfolk not to venture out, while tourism and all onshore and offshore activities should be avoided until conditions improve. The India Meteorological Department said the deep depression moved westwards at 15 kmph over the past six hours and strengthened into a cyclonic storm on Monday morning. It is very likely to become a severe cyclonic storm by midnight on October 26 and a very severe cyclonic storm over west-central Bay of Bengal on October 27. A separate advisory noted Cyclone Arnab is expected to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh on October 28, with the evacuation of 5.7 lakh people set to begin soon. Satellite imagery confirms the storm tracking towards the Andhra coast as it gains strength.
Why it matters
Over 5.7 lakh people in Andhra Pradesh face evacuation and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are under a two-day shutdown, disrupting education, fishing, and tourism while authorities brace for a very severe cyclonic storm landfall.
