Android Launches Registered App Stores Program for Sideloading
· Technology · Android Authority, Ars Technica
Google has opened enrollment for the Registered App Stores program, which introduces a streamlined installation flow for third-party app stores on Android devices. Eligible app stores outside the US can apply starting today ahead of the feature's rollout on December 1 for devices running Android 17 QPR2 and later. Participating stores that complete enrollment will benefit from one-tap installs without secondary system confirmations, along with automatic background updates and download progress indicators. The program stems from a proposed settlement between Google and Epic Games, though developers must pay an annual registration fee and additional review fees if malware thresholds are exceeded. US availability will follow once court approval is secured.
Why it matters
The program changes how Android users install and update third-party app stores, reducing friction for developers while maintaining ecosystem security rules.
