Ankit Baliyan Murder Accused Seeks Handcuffs During UP Custody Transfer
· India · India Today, The Hindu
Rakesh alias Pappu, a gangster linked to the Gogi gang and accused in the killing of singer Ankit Baliyan, has sought handcuffs, leg-cuffs, continuous videography and armed escort if Uttar Pradesh Police takes him from District Jail in Karnal, Haryana. He filed the representation through his lawyer to the Haryana DGP, Karnal jail authorities and Shamli Police, citing a previous attempt on his life and prior directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The request came as Shamli Police moved for remand and explores a custody transfer to UP for the Baliyan murder case. Rakesh said the safeguards were sought solely for his personal security and not as a reflection on any agency.
Why it matters
The unusual request from an accused gangster underscores the high-stakes, multi-state nature of the Ankit Baliyan murder investigation and the rivalries between UP and Haryana police jurisdictions. It also raises questions about witness and accused safety in sensitive inter-state custody transfers.
