Annamalai Backs CJP's Right to Protest Amid Police Crackdown
· India · Hindustan Times, NDTV, Indian Express
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has defended the Cockroach Janta Party's right to protest and criticised the government and Delhi Police over their handling of demonstrations. In a post on X, Annamalai questioned the de-notification of Jantar Mantar as a protest site and the delayed bail hearings for detained CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka. He also drew parallels to a 2011 speech by Narendra Modi in which the then Gujarat chief minister vowed to wage a war against police crackdowns on peaceful anti-corruption protests. The former state BJP chief noted that he disagreed with CJP tactics but maintained that citizens retain the right to oppose and argue. The exact motivation behind the continued targeting of the outfit by authorities remains unclear.
Why it matters
