Anthropic Confirms Operation of In-House Biology Laboratory
· Technology · TechCrunch
Anthropic has confirmed it operates a physical wet biology lab where it uses AI models to conduct experiments. The company, which acquired the AI biotech firm Coefficient Bio in April, stated that the facility functions similarly to standard biotech labs by combining internal research with work from external partners. While the company did not disclose specific projects, it clarified that the lab is not focused on drug discovery to avoid competing with its pharmaceutical partners. The move follows recent public warnings from Anthropic leadership regarding the potential risks of AI, including bioterrorism. To manage safety concerns, the company also launched a Life Sciences Verification Program to provide vetted researchers with access to its most powerful models.
Why it matters
The development marks a shift for AI firms from purely digital modeling to physical biological testing, raising industry debate over the safety and regulatory oversight of AI-driven research.
