Anthropic Faces Cloud Capacity Shortages Amid Rising Losses

· Technology · TechCrunch

Anthropic is facing difficulties in securing sufficient cloud capacity from Amazon Web Services, Google, and Microsoft as those hyperscalers increasingly view the company as a competitor rather than a customer, according to a leaked S-1 filing. The filing indicates the AI startup believes it could spend more than $750 billion on cloud contracts, including deals still in negotiation, while also leasing its own data centers and working with third-party operators. This massive spending follows an $80.7 billion net loss in the first half of the year, during which the firm reported $16.3 billion in revenue. The documents also warn that Anthropic could face liability for damages caused by harmful AI behavior that exceeds its available insurance coverage. Despite these financial strains, the company told prospective investors that third-quarter revenue has reached $16.8 billion, representing a 45% increase from the previous quarter, ahead of a targeted November initial public offering.

Why it matters

The capacity constraints and heavy financial losses highlight the immense infrastructure costs and competitive pressures facing foundational AI developers as they prepare to enter public markets.
